0DTE Gamma Exposure Explained: What Dealers Hedge Intraday

A plain-English guide to 0DTE gamma exposure: how same-day SPX/NDX options force dealer hedging, why levels move through the session, and how futures traders read the map.

Search “0DTE gamma exposure explained” and you will find a lot of jargon. Here is the version futures traders need: same-day expiry options on SPX and NDX have enormous gamma near the money. When price moves, dealers who sold those options must re-hedge — and that hedge flow shows up in the index and in ES/NQ.

What “0DTE gamma exposure” actually measures

Gamma is how fast an option’s delta changes as the underlying moves. Aggregate dealer gamma across the 0DTE chain and you get gamma exposure (GEX): a signed, strike-by-strike map of how much hedging flow to expect if spot travels. Positive GEX tends to dampen moves; negative GEX tends to amplify them.

  • 0DTE = options that expire today — gamma peaks into the cash close.
  • Dealers are usually short retail/flow options, so their hedge is the mirror of that book.
  • ES tracks SPX and NQ tracks NDX, so index GEX levels are the map futures traders use.

Why the open and the last hour feel different

At the open, implied move and overnight gaps set the battlefield. Midday, volume GEX can rewrite the OI map as traders roll and chase. Into the final hour, gamma concentrates further — small tape moves can force larger hedges. That is why a level that “held” at 11:00 can fail after 15:00 without the story changing on the news wire.

How to use it without becoming an options specialist

  1. Mark call wall, put wall, and zero gamma at the open — your session frame.
  2. Watch whether price respects the walls or slices through with accelerating GEX of the opposite sign.
  3. Treat expected move (±1σ) as context for “how far is expensive,” not a target.
  4. If you trade ES/NQ, plot the SPX/NDX levels on the futures chart (or use MotiveWave Max).
